MEET LEIGH
A proud resident of Opelika for over 24 years, I have made my home in the city’s beloved historic district, where tradition and community thrive. I’m a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and have dedicated much of my life to service—both in my community and beyond.
I’ve been married to Barry Whatley Jr. for over 30 years, and together we’ve raised four children: Landon Whatley Jackson, Ellie Whatley, Thomas Whatley and Wyatt Whatley.
Faith and service have always been central to who I am. I’ve been a member of First Baptist Church of Opelika for the past 20 years, where I’ve served in the Women’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, and the Tabor Sunday School Class. My heart for missions has taken me to Honduras, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic.
I’ve also been deeply engaged in local civic and cultural life:
• Former member of the Opelika Historic Planning Commission (2012–2020)
• Current member of the Opelika Planning Commission (2020–present)
• Past member of the Jonquil Garden Club
• Current member of Les Saisons Study Club
• Longtime volunteer with the Victorian Front Porch Tour
• Campaign volunteer for Mayor Gary Fuller in all five of his campaigns
Opelika is more than just home—it’s my passion. I’m committed to thoughtful growth and development that honors our city’s rich history and preserves the charm and character that make Opelika so special.
Let’s build Opelika’s future while cherishing its past—together.
